The recent meeting of the Chagos Refugees Group (CRG) on Sunday, 29 June 2025, jointly with Chagossian representatives from the Seychelles and the UK in Mauritius, has brought to light ongoing issues related to representation and communication within the community. Preceding a shared meal, the meeting aimed to inform attendees about the CRG’s action plan in collaboration with Dentons Mauritius LLP concerning the sovereignty treaty between Mauritius and the UK.

However, many Chagossians have voiced concerns regarding transparency and accountability. The information made accessible primarily to CRG members has created a perception that only those in favour of the treaty receive essential updates. Furthermore, the initiative to compile an official list of Chagossian natives and descendants during this meeting raises doubts about its accuracy due to the lack of a proper census, the geographic dispersion of the Chagossian community which prevented many from attending the meeting, either due to their opposition to CRG’s representation or logistical hurdles.
This situation accentuates the pressing need for a more inclusive and transparent approach from both the British and Mauritian governments. It is crucial to ensure that the diverse voices within the Chagossian community are genuinely recognized and represented in discussions that will shape their future. Relying on claims from the CRG about having the majority of Chagossian supporters, without a proper census or referendum, risks marginalizing many community members. A comprehensive and participatory process is essential to foster trust and ensure that all perspectives are taken into account in negotiations affecting the Chagossians’ rights and future.
