The Foreign Affairs Committee’s Sub-Committee on Overseas Territories is conducting an inquiry into the UK Government’s engagement regarding the British Indian Ocean Territory (Chagos Islands). The inquiry is gathering evidence and publishing a report focussing on:

  • The current strategic importance of the British Indian Ocean Territory and its likely importance into the future. 
  • The extent to which the UK Government has engaged with the Chagossian communities in the UK and around the world as it considers the future of the territory. 
  • The spending of the funds allocated to support of the Chagossian community. 
  • The environmental importance of the British Indian Ocean Territory both now and in the future. 
  • The likely consequences of the UK Government’s failure to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution with Mauritius over sovereignty.

Chagossian Voices submitted a report to the call for evidence which closed on 29th January 2024. Our report can be read here:

Chagossian Voices report to Subcommittee Jan 2024

Three members of Chagossian Voices were also invited to give oral evidence to the subcommittee alongside other Chagossian community groups on Weds 31st January 2024. A report of the meeting will be published on the UK Parliament website.

The committee continues to gather oral evidence from other stakeholders and all the evidence and final report will be published and presented to the UK Government.
