Chagossian activists from Diego Garcia alongside Chagossians descendants are passionately advocating for their right to return to their homeland, having been forcibly removed during the 1960s and 1970s. Their recent trip to Geneva was pivotal in raising global awareness around their plight, emphasizing the need for genuine consultation regarding sovereignty negotiations that have largely excluded their views.
In discussions with UN human rights bodies—including the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), a non-governmental organisation —the activists highlighted their demand for self-determination and the implementation of a referendum for the Chagossian people. This engagement not only reflects their struggle for justice but also reinforces the significance of involving affected communities in decisions that impact their futures.
Their actions aim to address the historical injustices faced by the Chagossians, advocating for recognition and respect of their rights as an indigenous group. The unwavering dedication of these Chagossian advocates exemplifies a strong commitment to ensuring that their voices resonate within the international human rights discourse.

‘‘We’ll be back soon to Geneva, to carry the voice of Diego Garcia and all Chagossians. Our struggle continues, with dignity and determination’’ declared Mrs. Bertrice Pompe, who recently launched a legal action against the UK government to contest the transfer of Chagos sovereignty to Mauritius.
